In light of the recent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria with devastating consequences, this webinar will address the issue of humanitarian aid, its politicization, its securitization, and the alternative solutions that exist. More specifically, it will aim to answer the following questions:
- How does the Turkey-Syria quake reveal the backstory of humanitarian assistance? How did the longstanding flaws in aid operations lead to unforgivable paralysis in reaction to the disaster?
- How is the politicization of aid and the securitization of delivery mechanisms hampering aid effectiveness?
- What is the impact of sanctions on humanitarian efforts? Will the temporary measures of additional cross-border openings and sanction lifting help and persist?
- Who are the non-State and trans-State actors trying to offset the absence of the State and the political fragmentation? Is this causing more social tensions?
- What are the long-term needs of the impacted areas beyond the immediate response to the earthquake?
- Can the humanitarian response shift to more sustainable development efforts? Or is this still too early in the Syrian context?
