
The time to act is now. The Second World Summit for Social Development arrives at a moment when there is both tremendous crisis, but also significant opportunity. Today, humanity is inextricably interconnected and interdependent, on unprecedented scales. This can be a profound source of strength, as long as the community of nations is able to embrace that same spirit of solidarity that gave birth to the Copenhagen Declaration. The collective ambitions, already clearly articulated, demand a coordinated approach from the international level through to grassroots. That the challenges identified before the turn of the century have not been resolved, that they continue to deepen with alarming consequences, remain a testament to the fact that current approaches have proven inadequate.
