Social protection is key for social development and for all three pillars of the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development: Social protection has a direct impact on preventing and reducing poverty, supporting full and productive employment and decent work, and enabling social integration for vulnerable and marginalized population groups. The pivotal and catalytic role of social protection and urgent need to close persisting coverage and financing gaps were fully recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
With the draft outcome document reinforcing the centrality of social protection for human-centric social development, it was important to take a moment ahead of the Social Summit to reflect on the broader historical significance of this moment, and the level of ambition that is required, including from the USP2030 Partnership and its members, to deliver on the promise of universal social protection.
The goals of the webinar therefore were: (1) to summarise and inform the audience of the engagement thus far of USP2030 in the WSSD process; (2) to facilitate an expert discussion on the basis of the outcome document and the ambition for social protection and social development beyond the Summit and the SDG framework; (3) to provide a space for candid exchange among all participants on the opportunities and challenges for social protection and social development in this particular moment.
